Peterson victorious and the new WBA Welterweight World Champion

CINCINNATI— Lamont Peterson’s welterweight debut began with scant activity but finished in a flurry of punishing combinations, particularly during the championship rounds, leaving no doubt that the District boxer and his team had made the correct choice in moving up to 147 pounds. Saturday night’s unanimous decision over Russia’s David Avanesyan at Cintas Cinter for the World Boxing Association welterweight championship provided full validation, with two judges scoring the bout 116-112 and a third 115-113. Peterson, the former unified world … Continue reading

Peterson dominant in decision win

WASHINGTON — Before Lamont Peterson’s junior welterweight title defense against Dierry Jean of Montreal on Saturday night at the DC Armory, the question he was most asked was whether what happened in his last fight would have any impact. Peterson, of course, was blown away by big-punching Lucas Matthysse in May, getting knocked down twice in the second round and twice more in the third round of the knockout loss, although he remained as one of the 140-pound titleholders because … Continue reading

Lamont Peterson beats Kendall Holt by TKO in eighth round

District native Lamont Peterson had waited more than a year to fight again. The International Boxing Federation 140-pound champion needed less than half an hour to complete a dismantling of Kendall Holt on Friday night at the D.C. Armory. Peterson did his best work in the middle rounds following a slow start, and by the time referee Tony Weeks intervened at 1 minute 42 seconds of the eighth, Holt resembled little more than a punching bag. Peterson, meantime, served notice to his … Continue reading

Lamont Peterson: Still fighting, in the ring and out

On February 22, Lamont Peterson will fight for the first time since he became champion, since the drug test, since public opinion got up and ran away from him. The scheduled site for the abandoned rematch with Khan: the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, a marquee venue, home to too many championship bouts to count. The site for this fight, against former champ Kendall Holt: the D.C. Armory, the tired, 70-year-old de facto warehouse up a scrubby slope from the … Continue reading
